Here are a few common myths about homeschooling I want to debunk...
Some are questions I had when deciding to homeschool and some are from others who may be scared to start homeschooling. If I leave you with a tip, do your own research...
Myth 1: Homeschooling is only for religious or extreme families...
Homeschooling has no restrictions. Homeschooling is for anyone who decides to start. While some families homeschool because of their religious beliefs others do so for academic and practical reasons. Homeschooling is diverse; many people homeschool their children for different reasons.
Myth 2: Homeschooling is only for stay-at-home parents...
You can be a working parent and still homeschool your children. While being a stay-at-home parent (off the job) makes homeschooling easier it can still be done if you're in the workplace. It will require dedication, motivation, a routine, and a schedule to get it done, but that also applies to the stay-at-home parent.
Myth 3: Homeschoolers are socially isolated and lack social skills...
Yes and no. Yes, homeschoolers are socially isolated from the family that decides to be. That's the point, right? Less influence from society? No secret agendas being forced onto your family? That's perfect for THAT family. No, homeschoolers doesn't lack social skills because there's co-op groups, field trips, community centers, sports, extracurricular activities, and more you can put your child in. That's perfect for THAT family.
Myth 4: Homeschooling is less rigorous and lazy than traditional schooling...
Homeschooling requires just as much work maybe more than traditional schooling. There's a lot of planning and time that goes into homeschooling. To name a few, lesson planning, creating a schedule/routine, one-on-one time with each child when needed, field trips, extracurricular activities, co-ops, and deciding the best curriculum for your family.
Myth 5: Homeschooling lacks state or local regulations...
There are state laws for homeschooling. Depending on your state, there are different requirements for homeschooling. Look up your state laws. This website has great resources to get you started.
Myth 6: Homeschooling is expensive...
Many believe you need the whole classroom setup to be successful in homeschooling and that's not true. Many believe you need all the textbooks and curriculums to be successful in homeschooling and that's not true. You don't need an expensive curriculum to homeschool. You can purchase core subject workbooks on Amazon that are cheaper than a curriculum and just as effective.
I too was scared to homeschool. I had a lot of questions and things I didn't understand. And still, to this day, I have questions. Homeschooling may not be for every family and that's okay. Do what's best for your family.

I never thought about the fact that homeschooling can be done even when working! That's great! There have been so many myths about homeschooling over the years...I am glad to see that more and more families are doing this. I did not do it myself but have many friends that did! It was a great experience for them!
