How to Freeze Buttermilk

Ah, Buttermilk. One (yes, I said one) of the ultimate baking besties. But let's be real, have you ever prepped all the ingredients for a delicious stack of pancakes or craved your homemade ranch only to find buttermilk in the fridge past its expiration date or, worse, none?

Fret no more! I got you!

Today, we will tackle one of the easiest methods to freeze buttermilk. Yes, there are many methods but I find this way easier, simpler, and straightforward. Being a busy mom this is what I need.

Supplies Needed:

Buttermilk (of course)

Measuring Cup (desire amount to freeze)

Labeled Sandwich Bag

Before Freezing:

*check the expiration date

*mix the buttermilk well to ensure the liquid and solid components are well combined (give the jug a few shakes)

STEP 1: LABEL SANDWICH BAGS

BUTTERMILK------> write the contents that are inside the bag

1 CUP------> write the desired amount to freeze

6/10/24------> write the date being stored

STEP 2: MEASURE & POUR BUTTERMILK

pour the desired amount to freeze in the measuring cup and pour it inside the labeled bag

tip: only freeze your go-to amount-- don't exceed what you would normally use in a recipe- the goal is to freeze one recipe worth of buttermilk in one bag

STEP 3: SEAL & STORE

seal and make sure all air is out of the bag

tip: when storing, it is best to freeze flat for storage space and quick thawing

Tips:

*use within 3 months for optimal quality and flavor

*thaw in the fridge overnight, at room temp for a few hours, or submerge in cold water

Uses:

*can be used in baked goods or waffles and pancakes as is

And there you have it- an easy way to freeze buttermilk to save money and freezer space! You'll be well on your way to becoming the ultimate dairy hoarder (just kidding)

Homemade Buttermilk Recipe:
